From the “Plumpe” into the Olympic Stadium
"Ha-Ho-He, Hertha BSC" - when this call echoes through Westend, the Berlin football club is playing in the Olympic Stadium.
Founded in 1892, the club's history since then has been like a rollercoaster ride. Although the club were German champions in 1930 and 1931, anyone who is a Hertha fan knows what suffering means. The 2009/10 season, in which the previous year's fourth-placed team in the Bundesliga crashed sensationally, is a good example of this. Their relegation to the second Bundesliga on 15 May 2012 in a scandalous match against second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf also caused a stir. Over the years, Hertha fought their way back into the 1st Bundesliga, but are now once again playing in the second division.
Before Hertha moved to the Olympiastadion for the first Bundesliga season in 1963/64, the club played its home games at the "Plumpe", the then well-known stadium at Gesundbrunnen in Wedding, which has since been demolished. In the years 1986 to 1988 in the Berlin amateur top division and for some home games in the 1988/89 second division season, Hertha moved to the Poststadion due to a lack of spectator interest. Today, interest is far greater and there is an average of almost 48,000 spectators in the Olympiastadion in Berlin cheering on their team.
